چکیده
We study optimal monetary policy in a NewMonetarist framework with banking, private liquidity, and credit frictions. We show that whenever part of the decentralized transactions are allowed to use deposit claims backed by interest-bearing assets, the optimal policy is a non-Friedman-rule liquidity trap. In contrast, the Friedman rule is optimal if there are no credit frictions, or if the economy is monetarily un-

Liquidity, Monetary Policy, and the Financial Crisis: A New Monetarist Approach
A model of public and private liquidity is constructed that integrates financial intermediation theory with a New Monetarist monetary framework. Key features of the model are non-passive fiscal policy and costs of operating a currency system, which imply that an optimal policy deviates from the Friedman rule. A liquidity trap can exist in equilibrium away from the Friedman rule, and there exist...

Financial frictions and financial shocks can affect the trade-off between inflation stabilization and output-gap stabilization faced by a central bank. Financial frictions lead to a greater response in output following any deviation of inflation from target and thus lead to an increase in the sacrifice ratio. As a result, optimal monetary policy in the face of credit frictions is to allow great...

We study a model with heterogeneous producers that face collateral and cash in advance constraints. These two frictions give rise to a non-trivial financial market in a monetary economy. A tightening of the collateral constraint results in a credit-crunch generated recession. The model can suitable be used to study the effects on the main macroeconomic variables and on welfare of each individua...

Central banks in the major industrialized economies implement policy by intervening in the money market to achieve a target level for a short-term interest rate.1 Why central banks use a short-term interest rate as a policy instrument, and how they achieve the targeted value they set for this rate are topics to be discussed in chapter 11. The focus in this chapter is on the role of nancial mar...

Optimal Price Indices for Targeting Inflation under Incomplete Markets In models with complete markets, targeting core inflation enables monetary policy to maximize welfare by replicating the flexible price equilibrium. In this paper, we develop a twosector two-good closed economy new Keynesian model to study the optimal choice of price index in markets with financial frictions. Financial frict...
